Lustrous silk or fur high hat, signed on inner leather band by original owner, "Samuel Hand Shoreham, VT.", Crown Ht. 7.75", Brim Wd. 13", (wear at brim & crown edges) very good; included is hat's original pasteboard box stamped, "John Mayell Hat Manufacturer…Albany", fair. Samuel Hand born 1769 on Long Island, N.Y.; died 1845 Shoreham VT, Capt. Hand was a sea captain & fought in War of 1812, Plattsburg, before moving to VT to manage the family farm. Family provenance provided.
