Civil War era U.S. Naval ensign flag of red & white wool stripes & white cotton stars in 4-5-4 pattern on blue wool ground, heavy cotton edge binding w/ 8 eyelets, all hand sewn, 38" x 50"; 4-5-4 pattern is derived from flag that flew over Fort Independence in Boston Harbor in 1781. Originally accessioned by Chrysler Museum as early 19th C flag. 4-5-4 star pattern reappeared from 1862-1872 on Naval warships; (dirty, many holes & tears) fair.
